This pic in their store is a perfect metaphor for uhaul’s competency.

Kinja'd!!!

I called the local locations number, when I got someone on the phone I asked if they were at that location, and then asked if they had the specific truck and trailer I needed to haul an 87 Mercury Colony Park wagon. I was told by the person that yes they’re there, yes they have the units, and would I like to make a reservation? I made the reservation, put a card down to hold it, and then proceeded to call the owner of the wagon so that he would not go to work that evening so I could pick it up.

About an hour later U-Haul called me to tell me that they were moving my reservation to another location in Massachusetts because that was the only one that had the truck. When I asked why the person at the local location had said they had the truck when they didn’t, I was told that person was actually in Arizona at their call center and had no way to check the local inventory. When I asked why they let me put a reservation down on a vehicle they didn’t know if they had when I asked specifically if they had it I was told that it wasn’t a reservation, it was a request. The woman from U-Haul with snippy with me the whole time, and seemed annoyed that I had a problem with the fact that I had been repeatedly lied to, and kept saying “well that’s the call center” as though that was some explanation for her company’s behavior.

Without any other choice because I had already arranged with the car’s owner, I agreed to the moved reservation and headed out for an extra 40 minutes of rush hour driving to get to the location with the truck and trailer.

All total this move added two hours of driving and two extra trips to Massachusetts to both pick up and then later drop off the units. All this instead of being able to go to the location that is literally a half mile from my house. And for all this hassle I had the privilege of paying for 40 extra miles that I racked up that I wouldn’t have otherwise.

Fuck U-Haul.

Sorry fam. That sucks. You could possibly dispute that... with that... ummm... call center in Arizona.

The mileage. Tolls if any. All of that should be off the bill. Shoot. Uhaul near here will take some money off the bill if my shit is not ready when I get there.

yep Uhaul can suck their shitty rusted tail pipes. They did the same thing to me. The Uhaul location I wanted to use was within 5 miles of me. I called, they said yep, we have them. I call that store specifically the next day to make the actual reservation and they don’t even carry trucks that large and sent me 20 miles further. I was pretty pissed and didn’t want to pay the extra distance for being lied to and they said thats too bad.

Same thing to me. My reservation got moved twice, and added 2 hours to my moving day.

Never again, and I’ll warn people looking to rent about them. It appears to happen so frequently that it’s their standard MO.

That sounds like U-Haul, they were pulling that shit 10 years ago.

I never call to make reservations for this very reason. Throughout the years my family has moved several times, they always called in reservations...We often ran into “well the equipment was accidentally rented to someone else” or “it’s at another location”.

In my own U-Haul adventures, I do everything with them online. It seems the online system is live updating and to date, I haven’t had an issue with an online reservation. The one time I personally had an issue with U-Haul was when I got my towing hitch.

First I had to get it installed at a farther away location because the location I chose was temporarily not able to install hitches at the time for some reason.

Then when I got to that other location, they realized that they had received a hitch for the wrong car. So I had to wait another week to get it installed. When I arrived the next weekend, they decided to lob off the cost of installation, wiring, and the hitch ball. So all I paid for was the $150 hitch (no tax) instead of the whole package + tax, which would have eaten a $300 or so hole in my bank account.

I’ve always used the online reservation and not had any issues with it. The worst thing that they’ve done is the time I reserved a 17' and day of they didn’t have a 17' but gave me a 20' for the price of the 17.’ Turns out I actually needed the 20.’

I’ve had my own issues with Uhaul. I’ll never use them again. A friend reserved a truck to change apartments, they rented his truck out from under him, and he had to move his apartment on a flatbed trailer that took about three times as long to do. I will never, ever, ever use Uhaul. Ever.

Did I say “ever?”

Seconding this. I worked three summers at a UHaul franchisee (that did other things), and reserving through the main number makes zero sense compared to online or in-store.

I’ve come to the conclusion that nearly any scenario where I need to rent a truck Enterprise will be cheaper in the long run than U-HAUL. Uhaul may start at $19.90 but the closest one with trucks is at least 40 miles away at $.69 a mile. Or I can get an Enterprise truck the same distance away and pay $66 and that comes with 150 miles free. So unless I move to a city that has these readily available enterprise will be cheaper.

Standard procedure for them. At the closest location to me I would drive the 3 miles to talk face to face with someone who I could later bitch out if they screwed up my requests for the day I needed a truck. When I moved my daughter the pick-up was local but drop-off was in a sketchy part of Columbus. We think we witnessed a drug deal go down while turning in a box truck.

I called the local number, and specidically asked if the guy was in that office. He lied and said he was. Then lied and said he had the units i needed in stock.

I wonder if you’d have better luck with a franchisee? They’re hit and miss, because sometimes it’s just a shitty gas station somewhere, but if they screw the customer they can lose the franchise. Your local company center probably sucks balls - which there isn’t a clear solution to.

All I know is that the call center tended to send people out to us as a surprise, but we took our reservations/inventory *very* seriously, and the online system generally knew what was up.

I have reserved and then rented two trucks and two trailers from UHaul and never had any problems. I did all my reservations on-line. The only issue I had was they wanted me to drop a truck off in a city 20 miles away. I ignored that and dropped it at my local Uhaul location anyway and they were cool with it. FYI these rentals were in California, Nevada and Montana.

I rented a 15ft truck from them to move into my current apartment. I reserved it at the location closest to where I was moving from. Turns out when I tried to pick up said truck they told me I had to go 20 minutes away to Saratoga Springs to get it. I called their customer service and I got extra miles to compensate for the time I lost having to pick up the truck.
